HUGE Releases this week!! |
August 29, 2006 |
 |
|
Two big releases are out on the shelves today!! First up is Terry Brooks' new pre-Shannara book, Armageddon's Children! "In this exciting first of a new fantasy trilogy, bestseller Brooks effortlessly connects the Tolkien-infused magic of his Shannara books (First King of Shannara, etc.) with the urban, postapocalyptic world of his Word and the Void series (Running with the Demon, etc.)."
Also out officially in the US today is Robin Hobb's Forest Mage, Book Two of the Soldier Son Trilogy. "The second volume in Robin Hobb's epic fantasy tale about a noble's son claimed by an unknown magic . . . and involuntarily forced to act as a liaison between two very different peoples."
And finally, Rachel Caine's, one of my favorite 'new' author's has Firestorm, the fifth book in her Weather Warden series out!

A Jordan Update |
August 28, 2006 |
 |
|
This is from SciFi.com
(http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=37642):
Jordan's Condition Good, But Mixed
Best-selling fantasy author Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time) is back home in Charleston, S.C., after a visit to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he was treated for a rare blood disorder, "with mostly good, but certainly mixed results," Jordan's official blog reported.
Jordan, whose real name is Jim Rigney, has been undergoing treatment for a condition known as amyloidosis since April. Amyloidosis is a rare blood disease, affecting only eight people out of a million each year, which causes an abnormal protein buildup in various organs that can permanently damage them. Jordan's condition was first reported in a March 23rd letter to Locus Magazine.
Though amyloidosis is a serious and potentially fatal disease, Jordan said in his Locus letter that he has "30 more years' worth of books to write," and added that he doesn't intend to "let this thing get in [his] way."
Jordan, who is perhaps best known for the Wheel of Time series, said on his blog that if "worse comes to worst," he will finish A Memory of Light, the final book in the main sequence of The Wheel of Time, so that the main story arc, at the very least, will be completed. Jordan added that A Memory of Lightisn't intended to be the last The Wheel of Time book; he has plans to write two short prequel novels and possibly three "outrigger" novels set in the Wheel of Time universe. Jordan also has plans to write two Infinity of Heaven trilogies, a series set in "quite another universe." —John Joseph Adams
The short of it is that Jordan is back home for a time. The news from the doctors is possitive, but mixed. At the very least he still plans to finnish off the main story arc of the Wheel of Time series with the book, A Memory of Light. He will of course write more if he can, but that is what I wanted to hear. There will be an ending. Yay!

May 17, 2006 |

Del Rey, a division of the Random House Publishing Group, announces its first original graphic novel project: Dark Wraith of Shannara, a brand-new adventure set in the bestselling Shannara universe by Terry Brooks.
Dark Wraith of Shannara is set a few years after the events of The Wishsong of Shannara. Its main characters will be siblings Jair and Brin Ohmsford, the young girl Kimber Boh, Cogline the Druid--who can speak with the spirits of the dead--and the evil and dangerous Croton Witch. In the story, Jair Ohmsford discovers that he can draw on a form of magic that allows him to transform into other living creatures, both human and other. The magic is both powerful and seductive, for Jair can feel himself wanting to remain in each new form that he tries. The dangers he faces in Dark Wraith of Shannara, however, will demand that the power be put to use.

TOR to Publish Illustrated "Ice Dragon" by GRRM |
March 25, 2006 |
 |
|
Tor Books will publish a new deluxe edition of George R.R. Martin's short fantasy "The Ice Dragon" this September, as part of their Young Adult line. The book will be lavishly illustrated by the acclaimed British fantasy artist Yvonne Gilbert (http://www.yvonnegilbert.com). "The Ice Dragon" was written in 1979. It was originally published in the Orson Scott Card anthology Dragons of Light (Ace, 1980) and has appeared in several of GRRM's collections, most recently GRRM: A RRetrospective (Subterranean, 1983) , but this edition will be a little different. To make the story more suitable for children, the text has been divided into short chapters and certain minor changes and cuts have been made (most notably, one very violent scene has been toned down, though it was only a matter of removing a couple of sentences). A Dance With Dragons News |
February 02, 2006 |
 |
|
From GeorgeRRMartin.Com (under the Update button).
[quote=From GeorgeRRMartin.Com (under the Update button)]
THE FEAST IS SERVED, THE DANCE RESUMES
The hardcover of A FEAST FOR CROWS has now been released in both the US and the UK, just in case some of you have been visiting Mars for the past fhalf year. I have been touring all over the place and signing thousands of copies, but with the conclusion of my Canadian book tour last week, that's all done. I am back home again, and back at work.
With the FEAST served, next up is A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. This is the only place to find reliable information on DANCE. Please do not believe anything you might read anywhere else about release dates, completion, or page count. Until the book is actually finished and delivered, all that is just guesswork... and when it is finished and delivered you will read it here first.
A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will feature all the characters that you (and I) missed in A FEAST FOR CROWS. Jon, Tyrion, Davos, Dany, and Bran will all be present with major storylines, and toward the end of the novel Arya will appear as well, as will Asha Greyjoy. There will also be one new viewpoint character debuting and one old returning, giving me a total of nine POVs, plus the usual prologue.
The greater part of DANCE will take place at the same time as the events chronicled in FEAST... but though the two novels will run in parallel, there's nothing to prevent one parallel line from extending beyond its fellow, and the DANCE should indeed take the action beyond the end of FEAST. Just how far beyond remains to be seen, and will depend in large part on the page count when the new volume reaches the point where the last one ended. IF (and only if) I have the room, it is possible that I may drop in on a few more of the protagonists of FEAST towards the end of DANCE.
As of this writing, A DANCE WITH DRAGONS consists of some twenty-two finished chapters totalling 542 manuscript pages, plus another 100 to 150 pages of partial chapters, early drafts, scenes, and fragments. Some of that material will need to be revised, and of course much more remains to be written. My hope is to bring the book in at around 1200 to 1300 pages.
And before anyone writes me asking, yes, there is a third Dunk and Egg novella in the works as well. It's maybe three-quarters done, and sometime soon I want to find the time to finish that one too.
Anyway, that's how things stand at the end of January. I will try and update again around the beginning of April.

New Peter Pan Novel |
January 26, 2006 |
 |
|
An old classic of fantasy is getting a new sequel. I hope it will catch a similar tone and feel to the original. Here is the blurb at Sci Fi Wire.
New Pan Sequel Completed
The authorized sequel to J.M. Barrie's children's classic Peter Pan is complete, but the title is the only detail the publishers are prepared to give away: Peter Pan in Scarlet, by author Geraldine McCaughrean, the Reuters news service reported. The book is the official follow-up to the well-known tale of Tinker Bell, Wendy, Captain Hook and the boy who never grew up.
Peter Pan in Scarlet is due to be published on Oct. 5 by Oxford University Press, according to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for children, which was given the rights to the story by Barrie in 1929.
Award-winning McCaughrean was chosen from a field of nearly 200 authors from around the world to pen the Pan sequel.

J.K. Rowling Anxious to Begin Working on Harry Pot |

J.K. Rowling is planning on starting the final installment of Harry Potter's story next month.
"I contemplate the task with mingled feelings of excitement and dread, because I can't wait to get started, to tell the final part of the story and, at last, to answer all the questions (will I ever answer all of the questions? Let's aim for most of the questions); and yet it will all be over at last and I can't quite imagine life without Harry...I have been fine-tuning the fine-tuned plan of seven during the past few weeks so that I can really set to work in January." Marvel / Dark Tower Project Delayed |
December 08, 2005 |
 |
|
Stephen King is working with Marvel to produce a series of comic books inspired by and adapted from his Dark Tower novels, and will integrate scenes from the novels with new material, creating a linear history of Roland Deschain as a young man.
Stephen King and Marvel have decided to push back the launch of the Dark Tower comic books to 2007. "Given the size of the project and all the creative talent involved, I want to give the Marvel series all the room to breathe it needs and deserves," said King. "I've got so much else going on in 2006 - two novels coming out, CELL and LISEY'S STORY, and the work with John Mellencamp on 'Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.' The Marvel series is going to be a blast, and I want to have the time to enjoy it."
The 1st issue of the yet-to-be-named first arc of the Dark Tower comic series will be shipping in February 2007. The last issue of this six-issue series will be shipping in July 2007. The first hardcover collection will be shipping in October 2007. Source.

Dresden Movie in the Works |
November 15, 2005 |
 |
|
There is a movie in the works that is based on the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. It is for the SciFi channel so here is what they have to say about it (from www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?id=33221)
Blackthorne To Play Dresden
SCI FI Channel has cast Paul Blackthorne (24) as Chicago-based wizard and detective Harry Dresden in its upcoming TV movie The Dresden Files. David Carson (Star Trek: Generations) has been tapped to direct the two-hour backdoor pilot, which will commence production in Toronto later this month, with plans for a summer 2006 premiere, the network said. Blackthorne is perhaps best known as the villainous Stephen Saunders on Fox's 24.
The Dresden Files is based on the best-selling series of novels by Jim Butcher. It is being produced by Lions Gate Television, in association with Nicolas Cage's Saturn Films. Hans Beimler (Profiler) and Robert Wolfe (The 4400) will serve as executive producers alongside Cage, his Saturn Films partner, Norm Golightly, and Morgan Gendel. Beimler and Wolfe wrote the script.
The Dresden Files centers on Dresden, a private eye with extraordinary abilities. Where others see typical crimes of assault, kidnapping and murder, he sees otherworldly forces at work.

Keith Parkinson Died |
October 30, 2005 |
 |
|
I am very very sad to report that Keith Parkinson, artist for cover art for Terry Goodkind and David Eddings to name a few, has passed on.
The following is from http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/
In Memoriam: Keith Arlin Parkinson October 22, 1958 - October 26, 2005
October 27th, 2005 Update: The fantasy art world, family and friends have lost one of the all time greats - Mr. Keith Arlin Parkinson. Keith's wife Donna has informed us that shortly after 4:00pm PST on Wednesday October 26th Keith peacefully passed away, surrounded by his loving family. Keith had been battling Leukemia for the past 16 months. Keith fought the good fight every step of the way and at one point he had it beat. At that point, we all thought he was in the clear and we were even talking about him attending Gen Con Indy 2006 to build up his immune system with all the lovely sights and smells that tend to rear up at Gen Con. But it came back hard and in the end it was more than his body could handle.
I have just gotten off the phone with Larry Elmore and we are both simply at a loss. We had both been in touch with Keith throughout the entire process and the many ups and downs that the past 16 months have thrown his way.Keith was the youngest member of the "Fab Four" from the TSR Glory Years and was perhaps the most diverse with his many book covers and video game covers (Everquest was built around his artwork/vision). Keith was one sharp cat and simply just plain cool to talk with for hours about a wide range of topics. Keith was such a trooper, he insisted on signing the Limited Edition Parkinson Masterworks Set # 2 boxes while in the hospital. There was a top secret piece we were working on that Keith really wanted to see produced in 2006 as a personal favor. We jumped on it early to lift his spirits (unknown to Keith) , but as fate would have it, Keith never did get to see Mr. Gringe Commander in its "fully sculpted Tom Meier glory" or the new Northwatch piece from Dave Summers...Until Wed October 26th sometime after 4:00 pm PST that is....So the next time it is appropriate, please lift your glasses and toast one of the all time greats and his most excellent family...

Reviews - Ship of Destiny, by Robin Hobb |
August 14, 2005 |
 |
|
I'm a bit torn on how to go about rating this book. I can't help but compare the Liveship trilogy against the Farseer trilogy. But the only true similiaries lie in the fact that it takes place in the same world, that Robin Hobb is the author, and that the stories were beautifully written.
As this is the final in the trilogy, I will give an brief review of the series, and then a few words specific to this book.
In Farseer, we see almost the entire story from the perspective of Fitz. Through the Liveship trilogy we have seen the story from a myriad of different characters. This gave the book a different kind of strength, as well as a different kind of weakness. (read more)
